This is a great project for all your fabric scraps!
If purchasing fabric:
45 inch fabric: 1 and 3/4 yards for sizes 18-23, 2 yards for sizes 24 and 25. One yard of each fabric if choosing to do a different fabric for the lining and underside of brim.
55 inch fabric: 1 1/2 yards for sizes 18-23 and 1 3/4 yards for sizes 24 and 25.
For a pure sun hat, we recommend a woven fabric- with a max of 8oz. Cottons, mid weight linens, low-mid weight denims or twills would all work well. We love choosing two different fabrics for the top side of the hat and the underside/lining.
For a rainproof option, we recommend a lightweight oilskin, a lighter waxed canvas or a midweight coated ripstop. Skip all the ironing and interfacing steps and instead of ironing, press with your fingers or a blunt tool. For a truly waterproof finish, using a liquid seam sealer or tape would do the trick.
